What Are Cookies?
Cookies and similar technologies—such as local shared objects, Flash cookies or tracking pixels—are tools used by web servers to store and retrieve information about visitors, and to ensure the site functions correctly. By using these devices, the web server can remember certain details about you, such as your display preferences, login credentials, items of interest, and so on.
Regulated versus Exempt Cookies
Under the EU Directive, analytics, advertising and affiliate cookies require informed user consent. Technical cookies, and those strictly necessary for the website’s operation or the provision of a service expressly requested by the user, are exempt.
Types of Cookies
We distinguish five principal categories:
Analytical cookies: gather information on how users interact with the website.
Social media cookies: required for integration with external social networks.
Affiliate cookies: track visits from partner websites under affiliate agreements.
Advertising and behavioural cookies: record user preferences and choices for retargeting purposes.
Technical and functional cookies: essential for the website’s basic operation and for delivering contracted services.
